Rules of the XLV International Singing Contest «Francisco Viñas»
1.- The International Singing Contest Francisco Viñas, of Barcelona, 2007, is open to all singers regardless of nationality:
a) to all women between the ages of 18 and 32, both ages being reached in 2007.
b) to all men between the ages of 20 and 35, both ages being reached in 2007.
There is no exception to the age limits.
2.- In addition to the application form, each contestant must present: a) an official document photocopied to confirm his/her age and nationality, b) two recent photographs of passport size, c) a short outline of his/her musical studies, prizes awarded and professional activities; d) copy of the bank document confirming that the contestant has paid the registration fee for the Preliminary Audition.
This material must be mailed by post to the Secretariat of the competition (C/ Bruc, 125; E-08037 Barcelona; Spain).
On-line registration using the Contest website: materials a), b), c), and d) must also be mailed by post to the Secretariat of the competition.
No material sent by fax or e-mail will be accepted.
3.- The final deadline for registration is: October 15, 2007.
The registration fee for the Preliminary Auditions is 50 €. The candidate must pay this amount through a bank transfer (banking comissions to be paid by the candidate) to the following account:

and must send a copy of the bank document confirming the payment to the Secretariat of the competition along with the rest of materials (refer to article 2). Without this copy of the bank document, the registration will not be valid. No other form of payment will be accepted and the registration fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.
Any application whose materials will arrive at the Secretariat of the competition later than October 19, 2007 will not be considered.
The registration fee for the Final Round is 50 €. This fee must be paid in cash in Barcelona, after which the candidate will receive a Contestant Identification Card. Without this card, the contestant will not be allowed to participate in the Final Round.
4.- Candidates must specify on their application form the city where they want to participate in the Preliminary Audition (refer to article 7), and the titles and composers of the selections they will present in the Final Round of the Contest (refer to article 5).
The application will not be considered valid unless the programme is submitted as directed. No change in any programme will be accepted by the Organizing Committee after the closing date for registration.
5.- The contestant should indicate on the Registration Form the type of voice (soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto, counter-tenor, tenor, baritone or bass) as well as the classification in which he or she will participate: Opera or Oratorio-Lied and if he or she wishes to compete for any of the Special Prizes.
For the Opera Classification the contestant must present: 4 arias from Opera.
Opera Classification also includes:
Concert arias
Zarzuela arias (a maximum of 2)
Operetta arias (a maximum of 1)
For the Oratorio-Lied Classification the contestant must present: 2 oratorio arias, 5 songs.
Oratorio includes Cantata, Mass, Motet, Passion, etc.; and Lied includes melodies and classical, romantic or modern lieder
6.- The program chosen by the contestants should be made up of at least four works preferably from the following repertories: German, Italian, French, English, Latin, Russian, Spanish or Catalan or other languages. Contestants should be able to sing in at least two languages. The works should be sung preferably from memory and always in the original language.
7.- The XLV Francisco Viñas Contest will take place in two phases:
I.- Preliminary Auditions – The candidate will choose to have the audition in one of the following cities, according to the dates provided as follows:

Any candidate needing to apply for a visa will be obliged to have the Preliminary Audition in Barcelona.
II.- Final Round
The singers selected for the Final Round must arrive in Barcelona on Saturday, January 19, 2008. The Final Round of the Contest will take place in three auditions, from January 20 to 27, 2008.
II.1.- The Semifinal Audition, in public (with piano) will take place in the auditorium of the «Conservatori Municipal de Música de Barcelona», carrer Bruc 110, on Sunday 20, Monday 21, Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 January (refer to article 9).
II.2.- The Final Audition, in public (with piano) will take place in the «Gran Teatre del Liceu», on Friday, January 25 (refer to article 10).
II.3.- The Concert for Winners, in public (with orchestra) will take place in the «Gran Teatre del Liceu», on Sunday, January 27 (refer to article 17).
All the contestants must provide scores, both vocal and piano, for their selections.
The Organizing Committee will place a pianist at the disposal of each contestant. The contestant is free, however, to use his or her own accompanist in which case this arrangement should be noted on the application form.
8.- The Preliminary Auditions will take place on:

The candidates will be notified with the time schedule and exact address of the auditions once the registration form is received. This information will also be available on the Contest website.
At this Preliminary Audition the contestant will sing:
Opera Classification. 1 opera aria (The Jury may request that the candidate sing a second aria.)
Lied Classification. 1 oratorio aria, 1 song
The works will be chosen by the contestant. The contestant’s performance may not exceed ten minutes. Results will be announced to the contestant by the Secretariat of the competition and the list of contestants selected for the Final Round will be posted on the Contest website.
9.- Semifinal Audition.- The contestant will sing:
Opera Classification. 2 opera arias.
Oratorio-Lied Classification. 1 oratorio aria, 2 songs.
The works will be chosen by the contestant from his or her program. They may be sung in the order desired. According to the length of the Semifinal Audition the Jury may decide to omit one work. In any case the duration of the contestant’s performances may not exceed ten minutes. The Jury reserves the right to suppress part of any work presented.
10.- Final Audition.- The contestant will sing:
Opera Classification. 2 opera arias.
Oratorio-Lied Classification. 1 oratorio aria, 3 songs.
The works will be chosen by the contestant from those on his or her program not sung during the Semifinal Audition. However, the Jury, if it sees fit, reserves the right of requesting the contestant to repeat a work previously sung, in which case the contestant will be notified in advance.
The contestant may sing the works in the order desired. According to the length of the Final Audition the Jury may decide to omit one selection. In any case the duration of the contestant’s performance may not exceed ten minutes. The Jury reserves the right to suppress part of any work presented.
11.- The contestants in the Opera Classification who compete for the Special Prizes Verdi, Wagner or Light Soprano, must proceed as follows: Two of the four arias selected on the application form will be, respectively, by Verdi, by Wagner or for Light Soprano. One of these arias is obligatory (refer to article 12) and must be sung during the Final Audition (only the finalists will qualify for these Special Prizes); the other aria will be sung in the Semifinal Audition.
Concerning the Special Prizes Verdi and Wagner, contestants can compete for only one of these two Prizes.
12.- The arias required to be sung in the Final Audition are the following:
a) Verdi Prize
Lyric Soprano: Teneste la promessa... Addio del passato from La Traviata.
Dramatic Soprano: Nel dì della vittoria (Recit., Aria and Cabaletta) from Macbeth.
Mezzo-soprano: O don fatale from Don Carlo.
Lyric Tenor: Ella mi fu rapita from Rigoletto.
Spinto Tenor: La vita è inferno from La Forza del Destino.
Baritone: Tutto è deserto... II balen... from Il Trovatore.
Bass: Chè mai vegg’io! (Recit., Aria and Cabaletta) from Ernani.
b) Wagner Prize
Soprano: Johohoe! from Der fliegende Holländer (Senta’s Ballad, Act. II).
Mezzo-soprano: Weiche, Wotan from Das Rheingold Erda.
Tenor: Ein Schwert verhiess mir der Vater from Die Walküre. (Siegmund, Act. I).
Baritone: Was duftet doch der Flieder from Die Meistersinger (Sachs, Act. II).
Bass: Gar viel und schön ward hier from Tannhäuser (Landgraf, Act. II).
c) Light Soprano Prize
Air des clochettes (Bell Song) from Lakmé Delibes.
13.- The contestants in the Oratorio-Lied Classification who compete for the Schubert Special Prize or for the Spanish Music Special Prize must proceed as follows: Three of the five songs listed on the Registration Form must be by Schubert, or by Spanish composers and will be sung one after the other in the Final Audition.
Contestants can compete for only one of these Special Prizes.
14.- The contestants who compete for the Mozart Special Prize must proceed as follows:
Opera Classification: Two of the four opera arias must be by Mozart. One will be sung in the Semifinal Audition and the other in the Final Audition.
Oratorio-Lied Classification: Two songs and one oratorio aria must be by Mozart. One of the songs will be sung in the Semifinal Audition and the oratorio aria and the other song in the Final Audition.
15.- The contestants in the Opera Classification who compete for the Zarzuela Special Prize, the Russian Music Special Prize or the French Opera Special Prize must proceed as follows:
A minimum of two of the works selected on the application form must be Zarzuela, Russian Music or French Opera, respectively. One of the selections will be sung in the Semifinal Audition and the other in the Final Audition.
16.- The tenors in the Opera Classification who compete for the Plácido Domingo Special Prize for a finalist tenor, must proceed as follows: two of the four arias selected in the application form will be required; one of these arias must be sung during the Semifinal Audition, and the other one in the Final Audition (only the finalists will qualify for this Special Prize). 17.- The Concert for Winners as well as attending the Prize Giving Ceremony is compulsory for all those awarded an Official Prize (First, Second or Third), Extraordinary Prize or Special Prize. Failure to participate in this concert and to attend the Prize distribution will signify the surrender of the prize by the winner. In the morning and afternoon of Saturday 26 January, a rehearsal with orchestra will be held at the «Gran Teatre del Liceu», and all winners must attend it.
If the winners do not provide the scores and accompaniment for the works to be sung at this concert, they will be obliged to accept those available to the Organizing Committee.
The Organizing Committee reserves the right to add other participants to this concert.
18.- Through his/her act of registration in the contest the candidate agrees to accept these contest rules, as well as the decisions of the Jury.
19.- The «Fundació Gran Teatre del Liceu» and the «Francisco Viñas» International Singing Contest have the world rights to record and broadcast on radio or television or any other existing or future recording, reproducing and/or broadcasting audiovisual means, the performances of the contestants, who express and formally renounce to all the rights that, from this fact, they could be entitled to.
| HOTEL |
| The Organizing Committee will pay the hotel expenses (bed and breakfast) for the contestants who are selected for the Final Round and who are not residents of the province of Barcelona from Saturday, January 19th, until they are eliminated from the competition. To benefit of this paid accommodation, these contestants must stay at Hotel Catalonia Aragón ***, C/Aragó 569 bis, where their rooms will be reserved for them. This reservation and condition refers to shared room. If the contestant prefers a single room (he/she will make it known when at the Hotel) he/she will have to pay the difference due to its higher price. The contestants who participate in the Preliminary Audition in Barcelona will also have a reservation in Hotel Catalonia Aragón *** at a special rate posted on the Contest website. |
